THE BASILICA OF THE NATIONAL SHRINE IN DC, THE BIGGEST IN THE USA The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., is the largest Catholic church in North America and one of the most important religious sites in the United States. Dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary under her title of the Immaculate Conception, the basilica serves as the national Catholic shrine of the nation and reflects the deep historical roots of Catholicism in American life. Construction began in 1920 and spanned several decades, interrupted by the Great Depression and World War II. The Great Upper Church was dedicated in 1959, while artistic and architectural elements continued to be completed well into the 21st century. The basilica stands as a testament to faith, perseverance, and national unity. Architecturally, the shrine is designed in a Romanesque-Byzantine style, characterized by massive stone walls, rounded arches, and soaring domes. Built without structural steel, it relies on traditional masonry techniques using stone, brick, tile, and mortar. The central Trinity Dome dominates the interior, filling the space with light and emphasizing the grandeur of the structure. Inside, the basilica contains more than 70 chapels and oratories, many dedicated to Marian devotions from different cultures and countries, symbolizing the diversity of the American Catholic experience. These spaces are richly decorated with mosaics, stained glass, and sculptures, forming one of the largest collections of contemporary sacred art in the world. Today, the basilica welcomes nearly one million visitors each year, serving as a place of worship, pilgrimage, reflection, and architectural admiration at the heart of the nation’s capital.
